Using the Staples Online Learning Centre

What is the Staples Online Learning Centre (SOLC)?

The Staples Online Learning Centre is a library of short, task-based videos designed by subject-matter experts and delivered by training professionals.  All topics are relevant for work, school or home.

SOLC offers bilingual training that covers the most popular software, including the Microsoft suite.  You can learn, anytime, anywhere with unlimited 24/7 access.   All the courses are designed to make you proficient.  You can also take notes, quizzes and get a certificate at completion.

How often will there be new content?

New content is added on a regular basis.  Check out our News section  or browse the “All courses” section to see what’s coming.

Why can I only see the first video of each course?

The first video of each course is offered as a free trial.  To see the full series, simply log into your account.  If you don’t have an account yet,  subscribe online or activate the subscription purchased at your local Staples store.

Can I get a certificate of completion?

Yes, for most of the courses.  Once you have reviewed the videos and have passed the exam with a mark of at least 80%, you will receive a certificate of completion.  It will be saved to your account and can be printed anytime.

Who builds the courses?

SOLC relies on a team of professional trainers, subject-matter experts and instructional designers to create task-based, results-driven short videos that teach you exactly what you want to know in a matter of  minutes.

Can I submit a new course suggestion?

You can submit new ideas for course development and topics that you would like to learn about by posting your comments in our Feedback section, located on the right side of the screen.

Signing up and Signing in

What are the plans offered?

You can subscribe to a one-month plan, a 3-month plan or a 1-year plan.  All options can be placed on auto-renewal to ensure that you don’t experience any interruption of service or loss of progress.  All plans are available for purchase online or at your local Staples store.

Can I subscribe at a Staples store?

You sure can.  All plans are available for purchase in any Staples store, however, they won’t be on auto-renewal, which means that at the end of each subscription period, you will have to renew at the store or online to maintain your progress and certificates.

Can I subscribe online? What is the benefit?

Of course you can!  All you have to do is to select a plan under Subscription Options and proceed with our secured checkout process.  The benefits of subscribing online is the ability of setting up auto-renewal, which ensures that you will not experience any interruption of service or loss of progress.

Can I purchase a subscription if I don’t have a credit card?

Our online payment process accepts all major credit cards.  If you don’t have a credit card, you can purchase a subscription plan with cash, debit or credit at your local Staples store.

How can I cancel my subscription?

Can I pay month-to-month?

You can decide to pay month-to-month.  We should point out that it is more economical,  and  more convienient to purchase a longer subscription but we leave the choice up to you.  If you decide to go month-to-month, be sure to renew. You will have up to 5 days after it expires.  That way, all your progress and accomplishments will remain saved to your account. If you fail to renew in time, there is a chance your progress will be lost.

How can I add to my subscription?

You can add more time to your subscription by buying more time online.  The extra time will be added to your current subscription.

What happens if I renew before the end of my subscription?

The time will be added to your current subscription.

What happens if my subscription lapses?

We keep your account information for 5 days after the expiration date.  After that, there is a chance that your progress will get lost.

When should I activate an account and where do I go?

You only have to activate an account when you have purchased a subscription at your local Staples store.  All online subscriptions will be activated automatically. To activate your subscription, have your receipt in hand and click on Activate Account located on the menu.

When will I get an activation email?

You will receive an activation email within 1 business day of filling out the activation page.  The activation email is only sent to customers who purchased their subscription at their local Staples store.  All customers who proceed with an online transaction will gain immediate access to their account, without having to wait for an activation email.

How do I log in?

Click on Log In on the menu.  Enter your email and the password that you selected while proceeding with your online registration OR enter your email and the temporary password that was sent to you as part of your activation email (for those who have purchased their transaction at their local Staples store).

How can I  change my temporary password?

You can change your password anytime by visiting “My Account” and scrolling down to the bottom of the page, where you will find the option “Change my Password”.

Select a password of your choice and you are all set!

How can I get back in if I forgot my password?

Simply click on “Forgotten Password” located on the Connection page.  Enter the same email address than you used to log in the first time and an automated email will be sent to that account, with instructions to reset your password.  The link to reset your password is good for 24h.

Features

How do I take notes?

Once you have selected a video, you will find a button above the viewer.  By clicking on “Take Notes”, you will see a small window open on your right hand-side, which allows you to take notes while the video is playing.  This feature is not available when you watch the video on full-screen; we are afraid the window for taking notes would be in the way of the show and tell that is taking place on your screen.  If you want to watch the video in full-screen AND take notes, you would have to pause the video, reduce it and open the window for notes.

What is the benefit compared to taking notes by hand?

You can save your notes to your account and have access anytime, anywhere.  Even better, you can print a clean copy or email a Word or PDF document with your notes so you have access the next day at the office.

How can I get a certificate of completion?

Watch as many videos as you want and take the final exam.  If you score a mark of 80% or higher, a certificate of completion will be issued in your name and available on your account.

What can I do with my notes?

You can save your notes to your account and have access anytime, anywhere.  Even better, you can print a clean copy or email a Word or PDF document with your notes so you have access anytime

How can I provide feedback or ask questions about the courses?

Simply click on the Feedback button located on the right hand-side of your screen.  Please identify the videos that you are referring to by using its title and write your comment or question.  We make a point to respond within 24 hours on weekdays.

Can I play the video full-screen?

You sure can.  Click on the little square brackets located on the bottom-right corner of the video.  Likewise, to reduce the size of a full-screen video, click on the same little bracket or click on Escape (ESC on your keyboard).

Do I need a Flash player to view the videos?

No.  Everything is embedded.  That means that weather your computer is older or newer, the videos will play as they should.

How many times can I watch the same video?

Unlimited access = As many times as you want.

What happens if I have a question about a computer purchased or repaired at Staples?

You can call your local store directly and ask to speak with your favourite Tech.

Will I get an invoice for my online purchase?

As soon as the transaction is authorized, you will receive an email with the details of your transaction.
